With common household items and kitchen staples, you can transform your home into a DIY-spa easier than you think. Andrea Dunham, Director of Spa Operations at Miraj Hammam Spa at the Shangri-La Hotel, Toronto, gives us three easy ways to give ourselves home spa treatments using items found right in your kitchen!

Hand Treatment

With all the hand washing and sanitizing, our hands can be left pretty dried out.  Even repeated application of your favorite hand cream might not be enough to bring those paws back to life.  You can step up the moisture level by applying coconut oil under your cream and wrapping your hands in plastic wrap. Locking in the natural heat from your hands will help the products to penetrate deeper into the epidermis. We recommend doing one hand at a time so you have one free to hold your wine glass!

The Perfect Bath

Slipping into a warm bath can melt away the stress of everyday life. Set the mood by dimming the lights and lighting a few candles.  Playing some calming music or a relaxing mediation can take your bubbles to the next level.  Add in a few drops of essential oils for an even more luxurious sensory experience, lay back and let the tension melt away. While you’re soaking throw a towel into the drier to wrap yourself in post-bath and brew a delicious herbal tea to enjoy.  Make sure to have your coziest robe or pajamas ready to slip into afterwards – just like at the spa!

Body Scrub

For a base, any type of granular product will do the trick. Sugars, salts, coffee grounds, or brown sugar will give the desired exfoliation effect to slough away dead skin cells. By adding water slowly, you can create your preferred consistency. For additional benefits, add in honey or coconut oil for hydration. If you happen to have some essential oils on hand, it is always nice to give your scrub a dreamy scent by adding in a few drops. It is important to remember that scrubs created at home do not include preservatives and therefore have a limited shelf-life, so you’ll want to make a small amount as a one-time use.  When scrubbing, focus on drier areas like the elbows, knees, and heels. Remember to rinse thoroughly when in the shower to remove any excess product and follow with a hydrating moisturize or oil to leave your skin feeling silky smooth.
